The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center is looking for a competent, self-motivated, and dynamic candidate to join as Researcher –Water Resources Management.

The Researcher –Water Resources Management is responsible for performing a variety of water resources assessment and water accounting tasks in the various donor funded water resources projects for the IWMI Pakistan portfolio. The successful candidate will be familiar with the policy landscape on water-energy-food (WEF) systems, have advanced knowledge of integrated hydrological modelling, remote sensing applications in hydrology and water accounting, and have good experience in stakeholder engagement processes. Working with the project leadership and national and international partners, the Researcher will be part of a multi-national and multidisciplinary team that is contributing towards developing a hydrological model and tools for the Indus River basin by leading global nexus thinking and providing tools, guidelines, training and facilitation for analysis and research for development. The Researcher will also develop a framework to map the water use and quantify water demand for all sectors and the productivity of water use for each sector by implementing state-of-the-art remote sensing tools.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead in developing hydrological models to support WEF Nexus Innovations using foresight and trade-off methodologies at Indus Basin
  • Water resources assessments, water accounting and water productivity analyses of various water-dependent sectors (domestic, agriculture, industrial and environmental) for the selected basin and sub-basin scale in the Punjab
  • Apply Water Accounting (WA+) framework that reports on the consumptive use of water for determining agricultural, ecosystem and climate services across scales ranging from the sub-basin to basin scale.
  • Develop a water accounting and remote-sensing based evapotranspiration (ET) water management system at the sub-basin and basin scale.
  • Assess incremental improvements in water productivity of the agriculture sector on annual basis at the basin scale.
  • Develop technical guidance on the application of different water accounting approaches suited to particular biophysical and water management contexts for the Indus Basin scale.
  • Take lead in stakeholder engagements with relevant government departments and partners to ensure that important local, national and regional demands in the Indus basin for research for development are identified and incorporated into the research activities specific to hydrologic modelling and water productivity.
  • Facilitate participatory processes; stakeholders’ engagement and partnerships; co-designing of innovations; and project management.
  • Support the IWMI Country Representative in managing other relevant One CG initiatives and projects.
  • Identify new research trends and niches and develop multi-year multi-partner proposals for innovative research.
  • Lead and contribute to proposal writing and fundraising opportunities for bilateral and multilateral funding sources.
  • Provide information on relevant projects and research results and breakthroughs for communication to donors, research users, partners, networks and policy platforms.
  • Disseminate research findings via peer-reviewed publications; convene and attend workshops, conferences and webinars in a range of international, regional and national settings.

Requirements

Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • A PhD or equivalent in hydrology, water resources, natural resources management, or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant post-doctoral professional experience, preferably related to research, and with project management experience in a Pakistan or South Asia context.
  • Proven knowledge of integrated hydrological modelling tools and water productivity assessment methodologies
  • Proven skills of working with WA+ framework at the sub-basin and basin scale.
  • Prior experience of working with energy balance algorithms including writing and executing scripts in Python for water accounting and water resources assessments.
  • Experience designing and implementing approaches for data scarce environments.
  • Must have a strong analytical mindset.
  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge and research experience relevant to the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem nexus.
  • Experience in engaging with regional and international professional networks and building strong partnerships with different categories of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated evidence of participatory processes; ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders; and excellent project management skills.
  • Evidence of scientific publishing is demonstrated by a very good publication record in peer-reviewed journals, research impact and other acknowledgements.
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills and the ability to process large temporal and spatial datasets.
  • Ability to use advanced spatial analysis, Geographic Information Systems tools and hydrological modelling approaches for multiple scale assessments.
  • Independent and critical scientific thought including a sound understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of spatial tools for hydrological modelling and water resource assessments at different spatial scales.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain development challenges and complex interdisciplinary water, environment, and agri-food systems issues in simple terms.
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people in a multicultural and multi-disciplinary environment, with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
  • Effective listening skills, and excellent verbal, and written communication skills in English.
